Feeling the Skold

Feeling the Skold: Tim Skold, for the uninitiated, was the mastermind behind Swedish rock & rollers Shotgun Messiah. That band released three awesome albums between 1989 and ’93, the third of which was the industrial-tinged, ahead of its time, Violent New Breed. That would prove to be a prophetic record, because soon afterwards Skold embarked on a very industrial solo career, and release a string of great albums. In between, Skold would be a member of KMFDM and Marilyn Manson for lengthy spells (he still occasionally plays “Anarchy,” a song that he wrote for KMFDM, but not tonight). But one always suspected that he’s happiest when he has full control of his music. His latest album under the Skold name, Seven Heads, dropped this year, though he only played the most recent single from it, “Rat King,” at the Whisky A Go Go on Sunday evening. The rest of the set was a blast though, spanning his solo career and a little bit more. There were lows, so l...

By Jessie Gretener and Sharon Brathwaite | CNNUNESCO has recommended that one of the most popular and fragile tourist destinations in Italy be added to its heritage danger list. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is calling on the Italian government to “ensure the utmost dedication” to address “long-standing problems” in Venice, which has been grappling for years with too many tourists and the effects of climate change.Venice is one of 1,157 places currently designated a World Heritage Site, which have “outstanding universal value” because of their cultural or natural offerings. The recommendation to put Venice on the World Heritage in Danger list was made by UNESCO and advisory body experts in its provisional agenda ahead of the 45th session of the agency’s World Heritage Committee, which is scheduled to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in September. The draft resolution argues that there has not been a “significant level of progress in addressing the...

Niger faces international sanctions as democracy crumbles

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 14:59:35 GMT

By Sam Mednick | Associated PressNIAMEY, Niger — Economic sanctions could severely hurt one of the world’s poorest nations after a coup unseated one of the West’s last democratic partners against Islamic extremists in West Africa’s Sahel region. In the capital of Niger, many people live in makeshift shelters tied together with slats of wood, sheets and plastic tarps because they can’t pay rent, and they scramble daily to make enough money to feed their children.Salou Hassan and his family live in a two-room hut on the side of the road, along with some 140 people. The family sleeps on wooden slats close to the floor, with no electricity or running water, and they bathe in public showers.“The most difficult part is finding food for my children,” said Hassan, 30, whose sons are 5 and 6 years old.Hassan sells water door to door, earning about $6 a day when things go well. His wheelbarrow’s been broken and he doesn’t have nearly $70 he needs...

49ers QB Roll Call: Brock Purdy returns, as do practices in full pads

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 14:59:35 GMT

SANTA CLARA — Monday marked the 49ers’ first practice in full pads at training camp, and it also brought Brock Purdy’s third session after back-to-back days to rest his surgically repaired arm. Here is how he and the three other quarterbacks fared:Brock PurdyArguably his best pass evoked memories of last season: He spotted Christian McCaffrey racing in one-on-one coverage against Fred Warner and completed a 30-yard dime. Next snap, Purdy threw to Elijah Mitchell, who got clothesline tackled by Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, and three scrums promptly broke out between the offense and defense.Purdy’s worst pass was intercepted by Dre Greenlaw, after it floated 20 yards (and short) of George Kittle. Purdy’s final pass (12-of-17) saw him connect with Deebo Samuel, while safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. came on a blitz. How has Purdy been in the huddle upon his return? “Same as it was before. I don’t think he’s changed,” guard Aaron Banks said. “...
