OAKLAND — Warriors guard Moses Moody came to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital on Thursday with a bag full of team gear. His mere presence was a gift to the boy in the wheelchair.Asa is an 8-year-old from Oakland whose young life was forever changed on July 14, when he was struck in the back of the neck by a stray bullet. He was hit while riding in the backseat of a car driving down I-580 that was caught between two cars with people shooting at each other.Asa is paralyzed from the neck down. He lives on a respirator and a feeding tube and requires round-the-clock nursing care, therapy and more surgeries to come.Through it all, though, his family sees Asa’s passions glimmer at the surface.“He’s not always that excited to get up in the wheelchair, which is new to him,” said Asa’s mom, Melissa Neuwelt. “But when he found out Moses Moody was coming he said, ‘Let’s do this.'”Asa loves to read, play chess and requests to hear ...

‘Police playground:’ Opposition grows to $44 million regional training facility and HQ in San Pablo

SAN PABLO — A $43.6 million law enforcement regional training center and new police headquarters is coming to San Pablo, a largely low-income, Hispanic and aging enclave in West Contra Costa County home to roughly 31,000 residents and 62 sworn officers — and not everyone is happy about it.According to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, San Pablo is the most policed city in the county, relative to its population. Now after quietly slogging through more than three years of planning, construction on this project — one of the largest in city history — is scheduled to start in October, despite growing controversy and public protest. The proposed two-story, 42,000-square-foot facility is slated for a vacant city-owned lot on Gateway Avenue, replacing the city’s current police department headquarters. The development promises to attract law enforcement agencies from across the Bay Area and alternative public safety organizations, such as Contra Costa County’s m...

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:24:53 GMT

SANTA CLARA – Sandwiched between last Thursday night’s home-opening hoopla and next Sunday night’s visit by the Dallas Cowboy is … a trap game? No, no, that can’t be right. The 49ers’ schedule says this Sunday’s matinee is simply against the Arizona Cardinals.Any NFC West matchup carries extra weight, and the undefeated Niners (3-0) insist they aren’t taking lightly the incoming Cardinals (1-2). Nor should they.“They’re a team that really should be 3-0 right now,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. The Cardinals have taken a fourth-quarter lead into each of their games, only to lose against the Washington Commanders and the New York Giants before upsetting the previously undefeated Dallas Cowboys last Sunday, 28-16.“Arizona looked like a really solid team that was playing harder than Dallas,” said defensive end Nick Bosa, who caught that game on television over the weekend after Thursday night’s 30-12, home-opening win by the 49ers over the New York Giants.Speaking of L...

Smugglers damage trucks waiting to cross US border

JUAREZ, Mexico (Border Report) – Mexican industry leaders are calling for an end to Texas border truck inspections given they are hindering components assembled in Juarez from reaching U.S. distribution centers. They also are concerned that limited operating hours at smaller ports of entry outside the El Paso-Juarez urban sprawl are jeopardizing drivers and their trucks.“The cargo vehicles that spent the night (waiting to cross the Santa Teresa, New Mexico port of entry) had their tires slashed,” said Manuel Sotelo, president of the Juarez Transportation Association. “Last night you could see people passing by. It looks like that is a migrant (smuggling) route. It seems we are getting in their way. The drivers were worried because of the people hanging out there.”Trucking companies are addressing the safety issue by shuffling more personnel to the crossings: staff to watch the trucks at night and “fresh” drivers in the morning to spell the ones that spent the previous day in line, So...

Rejected by US courts, Onondaga Nation take centuries-old land rights case to international panel

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:24:53 GMT

ONONDAGA NATION TERRITORY (AP) — The Onondaga Nation has protested for centuries that illegal land grabs shrank its territory from what was once thousands of square miles in upstate New York to a relatively paltry patch of land south of Syracuse. It took its case to President George Washington, to Congress and, more recently, to a U.S. court. All failed. So now the nation is presenting its case to an international panel. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights recently allowed the Onondagas to pursue claims their land was taken unjustly by New York state, providing a unique venue for a land rights case against the United States by a Native American nation. The U.S. government is not expected to abide by any opinion by the commission, which is part of the Organization of American States, a pro-democracy grouping of Western Hemisphere nations. The Onondagas say they don’t want to force people from their homes. But they hope the novel case, which is being watched by other indi...

Dianne Feinstein was at the center of a key LGBTQ+ moment. She’s being lauded as an evolving ally

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:24:53 GMT

Dianne Feinstein once stood at the center of a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history. Decades later, in death, she’s being lauded by LGBTQ+ leaders as a longtime ally who, if she didn’t always initially do the right thing, was able to learn and evolve.Feinstein was president of the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors when she stood behind reporters’ microphones in November 1978 and grimly announced: “Both Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk have been shot and killed. The suspect is Supervisor Dan White.”George Moscone was the liberal mayor of San Francisco; Milk was California’s first openly gay elected official. White was a disgruntled former fellow county supervisor who was the board’s sole vote against a gay anti-discrimination ordinance. And Feinstein, at age 45, found herself at the helm of a global center of gay life that, already roiled by the violence, was about to be further upended by AIDS.She rose to the challenge and then some, advocates said after Fein...
