DENVER (KDVR) — One in six Colorado children don't have access to the food they need. Kids that don’t have proper nutrition during the summer are more likely to experience learning loss. Thirty percent of students in the Cherry Creek School District qualify for free or reduced meals, and during the summer, families have to make up for the two meals that their students are missing. Free summer meals Monday, June 5, is the first day that free meals will be served to students at mobile sites. There are six sites in the Aurora area for Cherry Creek School District students and two joint sites with Aurora Public Schools. They anticipate serving that many, if not more, this summer. However, one COVID-era change is being missed by parents and students. “Unfortunately, the waivers that we had during COVID allowed families ...Accused killer of tech exec Bob Lee pleads not guilty to murder charge at arraignment

(CNN) — The man accused of fatally stabbing tech executive Bob Lee last month pleaded not guilty to murder in a San Francisco court Thursday.Nima Momeni, 38, will be held in custody without bail, the judge said.Assistant District Attorney Omid Talai argued Momeni presents a public safety risk and is a flight risk. He said the knife used in the killing was connected to Momeni. It was a knife of the same brand as found in his sister’s apartment, and Momeni’s DNA was found on the knife’s handle, Talai said.Paula Canny, Momeni’s attorney, said the DNA testing on the knife “isn’t entirely accurate” and argued Momeni is not a flight risk, noting he had not fled in the nine days between the killing and his arrest.“(He) is a loving son, hardworking, has never been convicted of a felony, has no criminal record or been convicted of a crime of violence,” she said. Momeni is not a citizen and would risk being deported to Iran, she added.Canny said this was “never a case of ‘who done it,’ it was...Michael Keaton says he and director Tim Burton are doing ‘Beetlejuice 2’ ‘exactly like we did the first movie’

(CNN) — Most would agree the 1988 film “Beetlejuice” is a classic. And two of the main creative forces behind the macabre and comedic movie – titular star Michael Keaton and visionary director Tim Burton – say they plan to stick closely to the iconic film as they tackle its long-awaited sequel.Oscar nominee Keaton spoke with British film magazine Empire over the weekend about he and Burton’s plans for making the sequel, which has teased followers of Hollywood for decades.“We both agreed, if it happens, it has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time,” Keaton said, noting the importance of using practical effects and “improvising and riffing, but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something.”Keaton added that making the sequel is “the most fun I’ve had working on a movie in I can’t tell you how long.”The first “Beetlejuice” saw Keaton as a fast-talking and highly inappropriate poltergeist who searches to take advantage o...Vaping helps fuel huge rise in bad behavior on planes

(CNN) — There was the hope that when mask mandates on planes ended and people got used to traveling again, airplane passenger behavior might improve. Perhaps all those midair scraps, diverted flights and the abuse and harassment of flight attendants might die down. That dream’s been dashed.Unruly passenger incidents were more than a third higher in 2022 than in 2021, a new global analysis by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has revealed. The aviation body has recorded an increase of 37% year on year, with the most common types of incidents being ones that involve non-compliance, verbal abuse and intoxication.Smoking of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes and “puff devices” in the cabin or lavatories was the No.1 non-compliance issue highlighted by the IATA, followed by failure to fasten seat belts when instructed, exceeding the carry-on baggage allowance or failing to store baggage when required, and consumption of own alcohol on board.Physical abuse on riseThere was one...Crews responding to water main break in Malden

SAN DIEGO -- Just days after the grand opening event, a man broke into the Beeside Balcony La Jolla early Saturday morning and stole the restaurant's cash register.Beeside Balcony chef and owner, Christophe Cevasco, first started serving his specialties at the Del Mar location with La Jolla next in line. After years of hard work, he was excited for the opening of his La Jolla location last Thursday, June 1. But, that excitement quickly turned to frustration just two days later when someone was caught on security camera around 6 a.m. Saturday, stealing the cash register from behind the restaurant's bar after breaking in through the delivery entrance."He walked right in, grabbed the register, pulled the whole set up, ripped everything off the wall," Cevasco told FOX 5.According to the owner, the suspect was in and out of the restaurant within a minute, taking with him about $500 that was inside the register. Cevasco said, "He was on a mission … he was in and out." Man struck by vehi...The Miami Heat roar back in Game 2 to tie the Denver Nuggets in NBA Finals

DENVER (AP) — Staring down a 2-0 deficit in the NBA Finals, as the visitors in a hostile arena where no road team had prevailed in more than two months, the Miami Heat decided to do what they’ve done throughout the postseason. They found a way. Against all odds. Again. The Heat tied the NBA Finals and had to overcome a monster 41-point effort from Nikola Jokic to do it. Gabe Vincent scored 23 points, Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo each had 21 and Heat beat the Denver Nuggets 111-108 in Game 2 on Sunday night.“Our guys are competitors,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “They love these kind of moments.”Evidently.They were down by as many as 15 points, down eight going into the fourth, and those numbers signified they were going to lose. Denver was 11-0 in these playoffs when leading by double digits at any point in a game, and 37-1 this season overall when leading by at least eight going into the fourth. The Heat didn’t care. BEIJING — Wall Street is relatively flat Monday following last week’s last surge propelled by U.S. jobs data that raised new questions about if or when a recession might arrive. Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are essentially unchanged heading into a week with little new data expected from major U.S. corporations or economic indicators from Washington. Energy prices are rising after Saudi Arabia said it will cut output by 1 million barrels per day to support sagging prices. But gasoline prices in the U.S. remain far below where they were at this point last year, according to price checker GasBuddy. The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. on Monday was $3.51, down $1.35 at this point in 2022, and down 4 cents from last week. Last year at this time, the cost for a barrel of oil was approaching $120. Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index leapt 1.5% Friday after government data showed employers hired more people than expect...Is it real or made by AI? Europe wants a label for that as it fights disinformation

LONDON (AP) — The European Union is pushing online platforms like Google and Meta to step up the fight against false information by adding labels to text, photos and other content generated by artificial intelligence, a top official said Monday. EU Commission Vice President Vera Jourova said the ability of a new generation of AI chatbots to create complex content and visuals in seconds raises “fresh challenges for the fight against disinformation.” Jourova said she asked Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok and other tech companies that have signed up to the 27-nation bloc’s voluntary agreement on combating disinformation to dedicate efforts to tackling the AI problem.Online platforms that have integrated generative AI into their services, such as Microsoft’s Bing search engine and Google’s Bard chatbot, should build safeguards to prevent “malicious actors” from generating disinformation, Jourova said at a briefing in Brussels. A policy in New Brunswick that took 10 years to create and was implemented by a Conservative government three years ago is now being “reviewed” by that same government.“Policy 713” was designed to provide safety for LGBTQIA+ kids in public schools, from washroom use to students being able to change their names or pronouns without parental contact. Premier Blaine Higgs has been vague about what the review entails, and phrases such as “parents have a right to know” have been used.Dale Smith, a parliamentary press gallery journalist and national columnist for Xtra, says that the Premier has not explained why the policy needs to be under review.“Policy 713 was entirely designed for these students, who don’t have safe environments at home, to be able to at least express themselves or be themselves in a school environment so that they can focus on actually learning rather than having to hide their identities and who they are,” Smith sa...Latest news
