“You know what Plato said about wisdom?” a club player asked me. “He knew he was wise because he knew that he knew nothing.”“A cogent observation.”“And you know how he knew that? Because his wife told him.”My friend had played at today’s four spades. He took the king of diamonds, led a trump to his hand and returned a club toward dummy.“West played low. I thought he might have grabbed the ace if he had it, so I played the jack. East took the queen, and I lost to the A-K of hearts and ace of clubs. Down one.”PASSED HAND“My wife said I should have guessed right in clubs. She said East was a passed hand and was marked with the jack of diamonds. Part of the time he would hold the A-K of hearts, and then he couldn’t have the ace of clubs. That wisdom was too subtle for me. Maybe Plato would have understood it.”I suppose North had a point. (South could have led hearts to find out.) As long as we’re s...

Eighteen years ago, Anne Shimabukuro of Potomac, Maryland, realized something was off with her body when she began having stomach pains when she ate.“I realized that something was wrong when I was feeling nauseous after eating, and then the pain would last all day,” she said. The pain in her stomach would last for three days and be followed by a limp when she walked. The limp caught the eye of her relatives who then urged Shimabukuro to go see a doctor. She went to her OB-GYN who, during a sonogram, found something small on her pancreas.Further testing revealed a frightening diagnosis: stage one pancreatic cancer.“When I heard that it was pancreatic cancer, it was just a shock,” Shimabukuro recalled.According to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, or PANCAN, for which Shimabukuro volunteers, the illness is caused by abnormal cells in the pancreas that grow and divide out of control. While the tumors that it creates can be benign, others can be malignant. In the United States, the dis...

Así son las propuestas económicas de Massa y Milei: ¿cómo se comparan?

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:02:30 GMT

He became a household name by hilariously hosting “The Tonight Show” for decades every night on NBC.On Saturday, comedian Jay Leno brings his standup tour to MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland.“I’m having a good time,” Leno told WTOP. “I just took politics out of my act. I’m just so sick of it. You get to the point where you mention one candidate’s name and [the audience goes] ‘booo, yay.’ You start, ‘Today, Biden or Trump said,’ they want to know the punchline before they laugh at it, ‘is it pro-my guy or against?’ I just took it out and boy, it makes a big difference, ticket sales are up like 30%. I think people just want to hear comedy, have fun and have a good time.”Born in New Rochelle, New York, in 1950, Leno grew up loving cars and comedy from a young age.“Anything that rolled, exploded and made noise I enjoyed,” Leno said. “I got into [comedy] when I was about ...

NEW DELHI (AP) — Virat Kohli is the highest-profile athlete in the world’s most populous nation, and he’s been living up to the hype by helping India reach the Cricket World Cup final on home soil. His 263 million followers on Instragram and almost 60 million on X, formerly Twitter, are in no doubt he’s the greatest player of his generation. With a win over five-time champion Australia on Sunday in Ahmedabad, at the sport’s biggest stadium, Kohli can replicate what the great Sachin Tendulkar did in 2011 by being the star attraction when India claims a World Cup title on home soil.King Kohli, as he’s sometimes known, was a young member of that winning India squad 12 years ago. Now he has surpassed Tendulkar’s record for most centuries (100 or more runs in an innings) in one-day international cricket. He achieved it with a defiant 117 in the semifinal win over New Zealand on Wednesday that moved him out of the shadows of the so-called “Little Master.”It’s been a long ...

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Two groups that want reduced plastics production published a report Friday highly critical of plastic credits, calling them a flawed tool that won’t help with worldwide pollution from the material. The groups — Break Free From Plastic and the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives — said the credits often amount to corporate greenwashing. They issued their report in Nairobi on the sidelines of United Nations-led negotiations for a treaty aimed at cutting plastics pollution. They analyzed publicly available databases of two prominent proponents of plastic offsetting, the accreditor Verra and the Plastic Credit Exchange marketplace. Their report cited “serious flaws” in financing, transparency and basic auditing, and said credits being issued for plastic incinerated in cement kilns were substituting one form of pollution for another. Verra, the world’s leading certifier of carbon offsets, said at an event alongside the talks alongside the talks th...
