RENO, Nev. (AP) — Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo signed into law Thursday a $380 million public financing package to help build a Major League Baseball stadium for the Oakland Athletics on the Las Vegas Strip as MLB’s commissioner outlined a months-long approval process for the A’s proposed move there. The first-term Republican governor and former sheriff in Las Vegas said he was excited to sign the measure the Democrat-controlled Legislature approved Wednesday night after a seven-day long special session.“This is an incredible opportunity to bring the A’s to Nevada,” Lombardo said in a statement from Carson City. The $1.5 billion stadium with a retractable roof is planned near the homes of the NFL’s Vegas Raiders, who fled Oakland in 2020, and the NHL’s Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup this week in just their sixth season.“This legislation reflects months of negotiations between the team, the state, the county, and the league,” Lombardo said. “Las Vegas’ position a...Las Vegas police arrest man who threatened mass shooting at Stanley Cup game

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Less than four hours before Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final was set to begin Tuesday on the Las Vegas Strip, authorities in Nevada arrested a man they say threatened to carry out a mass shooting at the arena where the Golden Knights would capture their first Stanley Cup that night. An arrest report released Thursday by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department identifies the suspect as Matthew DeSavio, who is described by detectives in the document as a 33-year-old man with a history of mental illness and arrests “that would cause a reasonable person to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, harassed or fearful for their immediate safety.” The report doesn’t say whether detectives have found any weapons in DeSavio’s possession.A lawyer who could comment on DeSavio’s behalf wasn’t listed in jail or court records Thursday evening. In a series of rambling text messages, phone calls and social media posts on Tuesday, according to the re...Fatal Manitoba bus crash brings focus on safety of at-grade intersections in Canada

The deadly crash in Manitoba between a bus full of seniors and a semi has brought renewed attention to the safety of numerous so-called at-grade intersections on Canadian highways.BC Trucking Association CEO Dave Earle says most drivers in urban areas where highway intersections have overpasses or traffic lights have no idea about the prevalence of at-grade intersections, in which two routes cross at the same elevation, and that they operate without lights even on major arteries such as the Trans-Canada Highway.Earle says while it isn’t always possible, easy or economically viable to build fully grade-separated interchanges, it would be much safer for all drivers.Police say 15 people were killed and 10 others were hurt in the crash west of Winnipeg at the Trans-Canada Highway’s intersection with Highway 5. The Trans-Canada Highway is almost completely a four-lane route in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, but a large number of its intersections outsid...Top Toronto mayoral candidates debate in final campaign stretch

Leading candidates in Toronto’s mayoral byelection are attempting to establish themselves as the candidate who can defeat Olivia Chow, who has maintained a large lead in the polls as the race to lead Canada’s most populous city enters its final stretch.Candidates from across the political spectrum are taking shots at the former NDP parliamentarian in an ongoing debate hosted by news channel CP24.Much of the heat continues to come from ex-police chief Mark Saunders, who is repeating claims that Chow will hike property taxes by 25 per cent. City councillor Brad Bradford is estimating Chow’s hike to be slightly lower at 20 per cent.Chow defended herself by positioning herself as a champion of the city’s renters, saying she’ll protect residents who don’t own homes or are facing renovictions.Former Liberal provincial education minister Mitzie Hunter, who released a fully costed platform earlier in the campaign trail, also accused Chow of not being tran...Pregnant woman shot and killed owned Seattle restaurant near famed market

Chris Williams continued his torrid streak for the St. Paul Saints, but it wasn’t enough to produce a victory at Louisville Slugger Field.Williams hit a homer in the eighth inning — his sixth in three games and 13th overall — to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Earlier, Andrew Stevenson homered in the seventh to extend the Saints’ home run streak to 20 games.
