WASHINGTON (AP) — Bound to the country of his birth by ailing parents and his devotion to treating Sudan’s poor, American doctor Bushra Ibnauf Sulieman kept working as long as he could after fighting engulfed Sudan’s capital. For days after battles between two rival Sudanese commanders erupted in Khartoum on April 15, the 49-year-old Sulieman treated the city’s wounded. He and other doctors ventured out as explosions shook the walls of homes where Khartoum’s people cowered inside. Gunfire between the two factions battling for control resounded in the streets.“Say, ‘Nothing will happen to us except what God has decreed for us,’” Sulieman, a gastroenterologist who divided his time and work between Iowa City, Iowa, and Khartoum, said in one of his last messages to worried friends on Facebook last week, as fighting persisted. ”And in God let the believers put their trust.”The morning that Sulieman decided he had to risk the dangerous escape from Sudan’s capital with his parents, American...

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minneapolis police arrested a man suspected of setting two fires that damaged mosques in the city last week as part of what the chief called “an attempt to inflict terror onto our Muslim community.”Police Chief Brian O’Hara announced the arrest of 36-year-old Jackie Rahm Little early Sunday but didn’t provide details of how he was apprehended. He was charged with second-degree arson after the fires were set on April 23 and 24 and an arrest warrant was issued.“Houses of worship should be safe places. Setting fire to a sacred facility, where families and children gather, is incredibly inhumane. And this level of blatant hatred will not be tolerated in our great city,” O’Hara said in a statement Sunday.Leaders with the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations praised the arrest after the fires that had unnerved the Muslim community in the area.“This arrest brings some relief to our community, which has been on edge for the past week,” said Jayla...

What's behind shortages of Adderall, Ozempic and other meds?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 15:33:57 GMT

(AP) - Shortages of drugs like Adderall are growing in the United States, and experts see no clear path to resolving them. For patients, that can mean treatment delays, medication switches and other hassles filling a prescription. In recent months, unexpected demand spikes, manufacturing problems and tight ingredient supplies have contributed to shortages that stress patients, parents and doctors. For some drugs, such as stimulants that treat ADHD, several factors fueled a shortage and make it hard to predict when it will end.Shortages, particularly of generic drugs, have been a longstanding problem. Five questions Wild must answer this offseason

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 15:33:57 GMT

Wild general manager Bill Guerin has his work cut out for him this offseason. He decided to be a buyer at the trade deadline this season, and appeared to build a Stanley Cup contender, until this version of the Wild proved to be no different than the rest. After going up 2-1 in the first-round playoff series, the Wild lost back-to-back-to-back games to the Dallas Stars en route to yet another early playoff exit. This is a far too familiar happening in Minnesota. The franchise hasn’t advanced past the first round since 2015.It will be interesting to see how Guerin chooses to navigate the coming months. Will he run it back with the same core and simply hope for a different result next season? Will he opt for wholesale changes to the latest group that can’t seem to get over the hump? Here are five questions the Wild must answer this offseason:Will there be any coaching changes?Though it seems like head coach Dean Evason is probably safe this offseason, some of his assistant co...

The White House is preparing for the massive role Kamala Harris will have to play in the 2024 campaign.Harris has taken multiple hits as vice president, and her political stock has plummeted following criticism on multiple fronts. Yet she remains a key player in Biden world, with even more importance in a reelection campaign where the 80-year-old president's age will be a key issue with voters. Now the White House is focused on building Harris up as it prepares for what could be a rematch next year with former President Trump.“There is an effort to re-launch her. I think with the age thing, the VP becomes more important, and it’s not necessarily to improve her, but to make her higher profile,” said a former Democratic campaign official.Speaking about the Biden team’s prior work to diminish Harris’s profile, the Democrat added, “I don’t think there are any regrets.”Harris was featured frequently in Biden’s reelection launch video this week.
